Orange Unified school district may require parental notification of transgender students The Orange Unified School District may be the latest to adopt a policy that would require schools to notify parents if their child is transgender. The proposed policy is being considered during a Thursday night school board meeting. The policy would follow similar measures adopted by other Southern California school districts such as Chino Valley on July 20 and Murrieta on Aug. 11. Those meetings involved plenty of heated debate from parents, community members, school officials and lawmakers alike.Supporters of the policy believe it’s a parent’s right to be notified of information involving their child, while critics believe the policy could open up discrimination or potentially put students in a harmful situation, according to California Attorney General, Rob Bonta. The proposed policy would require written parental notification within three school days after a student identifies as a gender “other than the student’s biological sex or gender listed on the student’s birth certificate.”...

Backups Mariota, Thompson-Robinson struggle as starters rest in Eagles-Browns 18-18 preseason tie PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Backup quarterbacks Marcus Mariota of Philadelphia passed for 85 yards and Dorian Thompson-Robinson of Cleveland threw for 164 while starters Jalen Hurts and Deshaun Watson watched from the sidelines as the Eagles and Browns played to an 18-18 tie on Thursday night in a preseason game that was marred by injuries.Mariota completed 9 of 17 passes with an interception and was sacked three times in the first half for the defending NFC champion Eagles. Signed to a one-year deal in the offseason to back up Hurts, Mariota was high and off target on several throws while playing behind Philadelphia’s backup offensive linemen and reserve receivers. Most of his completions were short passes that went for longer yards on runs after the catch.Philadelphia signed the former Heisman winner and 2015 No. 2 overall pick this offseason because, like Hurts, he can be a run and pass threat. The 29-year-old veteran has rushed for 2,012 yards and 17 touchdowns in his career, but also h...

Spain plays England on Sunday in the first all-European final since 2003.“We’re over the moon to be through to the final,” said Paralluelo, who was treated for what appeared to be cramps in Friday’s tranining session. “It’s incomparable. It’s so hard to get here and we managed to do so. And now we can dream big.”Paralluelo has been one of the brightest young stars of the tournament and scored two crucial goals to help Spain inch closer to its first major trophy. KHSC to limit weekend hours at its Urgent Care Centre

KHSC to limit weekend hours at its Urgent Care Centre Kingston, ON – Commencing Saturday, August 26th, Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) says it will implement revised operating hours for its Urgent Care Centre (UCC) located at the Hotel Dieu Hospital site during weekends. This strategic step arises from a scarcity of Emergency Medicine physicians.KHSC says the decision to reduce hours has been made to ensure “adequate staffing” at its Kingston General Hospital (KGH) Emergency Department site. Moving forward, KHSC’s UCC will operate Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weekday operating hours are not being affected and will continue to be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m, Monday to Friday. UCC caps the daily number of patients that can be seen, which means it may also close registration earlier than the posted closing time. The cap is determined daily, based on the number of patients, physician and nurse staffing levels, wait times, and the complexity of patients receiving care.“Despite our recruitment efforts,...

A dog is locked up, and these protesters want him freed PARKER, Colo. (KDVR) — A group of people protested outside of Parker Town Hall to bring attention to a dog they say is being unfairly held. Holding signs reading “Zion,” the protesters say the 3-year-old mastiff mix is hardly a dangerous dog, despite more than one incident. Colorado-based Boston Market has 27 restaurants closed over unpaid wages “Zion was involved with an ‘aggressive dog’ incident last year," said Josh Hartsfield, a protester who doubles as a law clerk for the Animal Law Firm.“He slipped out of his owner’s care, bit another dog. It wasn’t serious, you know. No dog died. It wasn’t the kind of thing where, you know, people had to go to the hospital," Hartsfield said.Protesters outside Parker Town Hall advocated for the release of a dog that's been held in a shelter since November by court order. (KDVR)Zion has been held at the Buddy Center in Castle Rock, a shelter under the Denver Dumb Friends League umbrella.Protesters say he has been there since November. They wa...

Family camper stolen from Denver home DENVER (KDVR) -- A Denver family is hoping to recover their camper that was stolen from their home on Wednesday.Brandon Martinez said it disappeared sometime between 1 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. in the 3400 block of South Elm Street."You hear about these things on the news, you hear about these things through word of mouth, but you never anticipate it happening to you until it actually does," Martinez said.He said the camper has been in their family for years, previously belonging to his grandmother who passed away earlier this year. These vehicles are stolen most from the airport — and they’re not Kia or Hyundai “We definitely had some good memories with her in it also, so this is the new step in the new generation, put our own little spin in it and keep it in the family," Martinez said. The camper is primarily white with navy blue trim and stretches about 23 feet in length and stands 12 feet tall. Martinez said the access door is on the rear passenger side, and there's a Broncos helmet o...

Potty-mouthed pooches fetch raunchy comedy in ‘Strays’ From Rin Tin Tin to Scooby-Doo, dogs have ruled, if not drooled at the box-office. But is an R-rated potty-mouthed, gross-out joke-filled doggie movie with Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx as best dog friends barking up the wrong tree during the dog days of summer? The film combines live-action with VFX dogs (and in one case, a Golden Eagle) voiced by Ferrell, Foxx and the rest of the cast. When the dogs talk, their mouths move along with the words. Our hero is a dog named Reggie (Ferrell). He’s an optimistic border terrier pitifully faithful to his evil human owner Doug (Will Forte), whose favorite accessories are his bong and his laptop. Even though the human is cruel to Reggie, the dog loves Doug and has a misguided bond with him. Eventually, Doug drives three hours to lose Reggie in a city, where Reggie, who has been damaged by this co-dependent relationship, meets new friend Bug (Foxx), a Boston terrier with attitude to spare, who teaches Reggie the rules of the street. Bug teac...

Despite cast, ‘Back on the Strip’ can’t pull it off

Despite cast, ‘Back on the Strip’ can’t pull it off A disappointing entry given the talented cast with which it is blessed, “Back on the Strip” was directed by the seasoned actor and comedy writer Chris Spencer, whose directing credits include TV’s “Real Husbands of Hollywood” and “Uncensored.” The film is essentially the tale of a young, aspiring magician named Merlin (Spence Moore II), who does not appear to have much talent in that art, and his desire to marry his best friend Robin (Raigan Harris, “Ballers”), an aspiring dancer. After being given a profanity-laced pep talk by his mother Verna (the very busy Tiffany Haddish, also a producer), Merlin goes to Las Vegas, where he is soon part of a clown act entertaining spoiled children. In this scene, a concerned father (Kevin Hart, who is in this film for about five minutes) throws Merlin out after of the party after a child throws his clown wig into a tree. We hear a lot of voice-over by Haddish. Before you know it, Merlin is staying at the old, renamed Moxie Hotel, where weed...

Editorial: Possible plea deals one more blow for 9/11 families On Sept. 14, 2001, just days after planes commandeered by terrorists destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, killing almost 3,000, then-President George W. Bush stood at Ground Zero and picked up a bullhorn.“I want you all to know that America today, America today is on bended knee, in prayer for the people whose lives were lost here, for the workers who work here, for the families who mourn. This nation stands with the good people of New York City and New Jersey and Connecticut as we mourn the loss of thousands of our citizens,” he said, surrounded by police officers, firefighters and other first responders. Some rescue workers shouted to him “We can’t hear you!”“I can hear you! I can hear you! The rest of the world hears you,” said Bush. “And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.”A little over two decades later, is anyone still listening? It must not seem that way to the many fam...
