After Dallas Keuchel made a successful return to the major leagues on Sunday, it was going to be hard to upstage the veteran left-hander. Yet the rookie from Forest Lake managed to do it.After Keuchel pitched five strong innings to keep the Twins within striking distance of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Matt Wallner delivered the fireworks with a two-run home run in the ninth to give Minnesota a 5-3 victory in front of an announced crowd of 24,778 at Target Field. The win gave Minnesota a three-game sweep of their interleague opponent, their fifth win in six games and a 4½-game lead on second-place Cleveland in the American League Central — the perfect reward for fans who sat through nine innings on top of a 2-hour, 12-minute rain delay.“Capping off a sweep … with that is as good as it gets,” Wallner said. After Max Kepler greeted Arizona right-hander Paul Sewald with a game-tying home run to start the ninth. The Americans’ bid to win an unprecedented third consecutive title ended Sunday night on penalty kicks when Lina Hurtig converted and Sweden knocked the United States out of the World Cup 5-4 after a scoreless draw.It is the earliest exit in tournament history for the United States, the two-time reigning champions and four-time winners.“We didn’t put anything in the back of the net,” sobbed Julie Ertz after the loss. “The penalties were tough. It’s just emotional because it’s probably my last game ever. It’s just tough. It’s an emotional time. It obviously sucks. Penalties are the worst.”U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher fruitlessly argued she had saved Hurtig’s attempt, but it was ruled over the line. They were huge, built on a 131-inch wheelbase, weighing more than 5,000 pounds and almost 19 feet long. They were a bomb. Only 2,044 were produced.
