Each bed had to be dug up by hand, costing the farm more than $100,000 in labor.Even then, the berries that survived to make it to market were bloated, insipid and expensive. “Everyone on Instagram was complaining: ‘These berries don’t taste that good,’” Gean said. “And they were right.”From January to March, bad weather and bland berries were the rule for farmers across California, who grow about 85% of the commercial strawberries in the United States. And the devastated crops, with their low yields, astronomically drove up prices for any berries you could find.Things have finally turned around: California berries are back on th...

Ask Amy: While I was planning to propose in a big way, she did something blatantly hurtful

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 14:38:18 GMT

Dear Amy: My girlfriend and I have been together for three years. She recently took a trip to her hometown. While there, she met up with a married friend of hers who has been blatantly inappropriate in the past. While she was gone, I was busy planning a proposal: ring shopping, venue, photography, the works.I clearly expressed my discomfort with this friendship, but she went ahead and met with him. (She has other male friends I have absolutely no qualms about.) Her lack of boundaries has been an occasional issue, but this time I feel really hurt.We discussed this with our therapist, who also thought it was not OK that she met up with this friend, but my girlfriend seems to think there is nothing wrong with it.She said they met in a restaurant and he tried making a pass at her, but nothing happened.During our therapy session, I pleaded that, even if she truly didn’t see a reason to block this person, would she at least do it for me?She said she’d blocked him, but it turns out she just ...

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 14:38:18 GMT

Additional funding for the most vulnerable Fairfax County Public School students is at risk as Virginia lawmakers remain divided over how they will distribute a revenue surplus and pass an amended budget. In a letter to the Fairfax County General Assembly Delegation, obtained by WTOP, school board members representing the state’s largest school system described the consequences of a Department of Education calculation error that they say has yet to be fully addressed by the state. That, coupled with no movement on an amended budget, has created uncertainty, the letter says.Like other Northern Virginia school systems, Fairfax County has approved its fiscal 2024 budget, a $3.5 billion package that includes a 3% raise for all staff and funding for middle school athletics for the first time. However, the school board said a finalized budget at the state level is needed to give local jurisdictions “time to adjust to any state changes that might be made prior to the opening of ...
