How Zach Braff got through a bad time to make ‘A Good Person’

Characters who never fall down, never have to crawl and struggle to regain their emotional footing, hold little interest for Zach Braff. The “Scrubs” TV alum’s four feature films — 2004’s “Garden State,” which he wrote when he was 25, 2014’s “Wish I Was Here,” 2017’s “Going in Style” and now “A Good Person,” in theaters March 24 — all reflect his preference for flawed individuals, ordinary people who get pitched a curveball that dramatically changes the game of life. His protagonists don’t necessarily do the right or rational thing, but their actions ache with an authenticity often overlooked in major studio productions. It’s a calling card of Braff’s to highlight the unpredictable nature of people, a tradition he used to joke about when he was on the celebrated hospital sitcom, which ran for nine seasons.“We would say that a lot on ‘Scrubs,’” recalls the 47-year-old South Orange, New Jersey, during a recent interview in San Francisco. “We would say, ‘Don’t do that …...Bay Area music: Here are 3 intriguing local artists worth hearing today

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Jerome Tang was tearing around his property on an unseasonably warm spring day not long ago, just before Kansas State headed down Interstate 70 for the Big 12 Tournament, when he noticed his four-wheeler was running out of fuel. So, the Wildcats’ coach did what anyone would do in a small town: He steered that bad boy onto the road, conveniently forgetting that it wasn’t exactly street legal, and headed off for the service station.“So I’m zooming down and the college kids are outside. They’re hollering at you, happy to see you. I mean, how great is that?” Tang recalled. “My wife was upset. She’s like, ‘You’re going to get arrested. It’s going to be on the news!’”Tang glances around furtively, his ever-present smile growing just a bit wider.“I can’t, like, get in trouble for something that already happened, right?”Not these days. HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Jakobi Meyers knew the question was coming at some point in his introductory news conference Thursday, and finally 14 queries in, a Las Vegas TV sports reporter asked it.“I was waiting on it,” Meyers said, pounding his right fist on the podium. “Thank you. I appreciate you, man.”The question Meyers knew was coming concerned his lateral on the last play of the Dec. 18 game between the Raiders and New England Patriots. He inexplicably tossed the ball backward in a tie game that seemed destined for overtime, and Las Vegas defensive end Chandler Jones snagged the lateral out of the air and scored on a 48-yard touchdown to beat the Patriots 30-24.Now Meyers will play in that same Allegiant Stadium as a member of the home team after signing a three-year, $33 million contract with the Raiders, of which $21 million is guaranteed.Meyers said he is determined to use his gaffe, which handed the Patriots a crucial late-season loss as they chased a playoff spot, to help ot...Match Play a final chance for some players to get in Masters

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Every shot matters every week on the PGA Tour. It only becomes more evident during certain times of the year, such as the cutoff for finishing in the top 50 for the Masters.Min Woo Lee is one case study. His chances of winning The Players Championship were long gone when he reached the 18th hole. Lee had a 12-foot par putt that he missed, dropping him into a seven-way tie for sixth place. If he had made the par putt, he would have been in a two-way tie for fifth.Turns out that was a difference of being assured a spot in the Masters and having to sweat it out at the Dell Match Play this week. Lee is No. 47 in the world, and this is the final week for those not eligible for the Masters to get into the top 50.If he had made that putt, he would be No. 40.Lee is not alone. Taylor Montgomery was tied for fourth at one point late Sunday at Sawgrass until a bogey on the 15th, a double bogey on the 16th and two balls in the water for a quintuple bogey on the 17th.
