Ask Amy: Volunteer wonders about service animals

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 22:24:19 GMT

Dear Amy: I volunteer at several public venues (including a zoo) where visitors frequently bring a pet that they claim is a service animal.Oftentimes this is clearly a lie. For instance, today a visitor at the zoo claimed that her puppy was a service animal. When I told her that animals weren’t allowed in this space, she took exception and dared me to quiz her on laws governing service animals.Management has warned volunteers like me to avoid getting into tangles with these folks — unless the so-called service animal is creating a nuisance or is a danger. When someone insists that their animal companion is a service animal or an “emotional support animal,” we are told to take them at their word. This is mostly to avoid the threat of a lawsuit.Would you please remind your readers that a service animal is a specific legal entity? Pretending that your dog — or any other pet — is a service animal does the rest of us a disservice. It’s entitled, selfish behavior that potentiall...

Bridge: July 1, 2023

“Simple Saturday” columns focus on basic technique and logical thinking. When a preacher told his congregation that there were more than 700 types of sins, he was besieged with requests for a list. Presumably, people wanted to know what they had been missing. There are many types of bridge errors: abuse of conventions, failure to count and faulty hand evaluation, to name only three. Maybe the most common error is neglecting to plan the play.Against today’s 3NT, West leads the queen of spades. Declarer wins with the ace and has 10 top tricks: two spades, four hearts and four diamonds. All he must do is take them.KING OF SPADESDeclarer must take the A-K of diamonds next, then the A-K of hearts and the Q-J of diamonds. He can reach his hand with the king of spades to take the Q-J of hearts. This is an easy contract to make, but if declarer plunges ahead without planning — if he takes the A-K of hearts first — down he goes. Surely none of my readers would fail...

Prigozhin Told the Truth About Putin's War in Ukraine

Wagner Group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin addresses his units withdrawing from Bakhmut, the city captured from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. May 25, 2023, Bakhmut, Ukraine.Credit: UPI/AlamyOne of the most subversive things that Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin did during his brief rebellion last weekend was to tell the truth.Prigozhin is a pathological liar, a professional disinformation artist who was indicted in the United States in connection with the internet troll farm he ran, which was at the forefront of Russian efforts to intervene in the 2016 U.S. presidential election to help Donald Trump win.But as the mercenary boss began his mutiny in late June, he experienced a brief and surprising bout of honesty when he launched into an online tirade against what he said were the lies used by Moscow to justify the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine. His comments were so candid and off-message for a Russian leader that it seemed as if someone had mistakenly handed him a speech meant ...

UK, Italy consider joining forces on irregular migration: Report

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 22:24:19 GMT

The U.K. is considering teaming up with Italy to address illegal migrant flows across the Mediterranean, the Telegraph reported late Friday. The newspaper reported that Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service Simon Case was sent to Italy in mid-June to meet senior members of the Italian government with the aim of preparing the deal. The agreement, which officials quoted by the paper said would focus on small boats, follows up on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in April by the two countries in an effort to tackle illegal migration under the “Strategic Migration Partnership.”Nearly 45,000 people arrived in the U.K last year after crossing the English Channel by small boats — a record high for Britain which led a few members of the Conservative Party, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s own political family, to demand tougher policies on irregular migration.Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, meanwhile, has been increasingly focusing on cracking down on migration flo...

TORONTO (AP) — Jarren Duran hit a two-run homer, James Paxton and two relievers combined on a three-hitter and the Boston Red Sox snapped a season-worst five-game losing streak by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 5-0 on Friday night.Justin Turner and Masataka Yoshida each hit a solo home run and Turner added a sacrifice fly for Boston, which totaled four runs in its previous four games.“It was a good night,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “We did some good things. We needed this one.”Paxton (4-1) pitched a season-high 7 2/3 innings for his third straight win as the Red Sox recorded their first shutout of the year and improved to 5-0 against the Blue Jays. Toronto won 16 of 19 meetings last season. In his previous start at the Chicago White Sox last weekend, Paxton left after four innings because of a sore right knee. Against Toronto, the Canadian-born lefty set down the first eight batters in order and didn’t allow a runner to reach second base until the eighth inning. He walked two an...
