Denver liquor shops — big and small — blame wine in grocery stores for falling sales The vote by a slim majority of Coloradans to allow wine to be sold in grocery stores has led to a drop in sales at mom-and-pop liquor shops in the three months since the new law took effect, according to store owners and the state’s independent liquor store association.“We’re screwed,” said Lisa Von Feldt, owner of The Wine Seller and Spirits Too at 600 E. Sixth Ave. in Denver. “I hate to say it’s the end of an era, but I’m afraid it could be for a lot of people.”Von Feldt’s corner shop was handed down to her by her father, who bought it from her uncle. “All of the liquor stores in Denver started out that way,” she said.Today, the Colorado market is no longer solely made up of family-owned liquor stores. Not only have national chains and big-box liquor stores entered the mix, but privileges once reserved for these establishments — the sale of wine and full-strength beer — are now shared with grocery and co...

The incident took place around midnight in the 2600 block of Lincoln Avenue and was recorded on a nearby Ring camera. The video showed what was described by witnesses as an older model Honda CRV apparently leaving a bar on the opposite side of the street. At one point after leaving the parking lot, the vehicle went into reverse and was seen crashing through a fence, a bush, and eventually into the home. Resident Luis Delavega described what it was like inside the home.“It was a little traumatic at first. You know, hearing the loud speed of the car coming through and the next thing you know just the loud boom and everything shifting toward us as we’re laying down,” Delavega said. The driver then apparently struck a parked pickup truck while fleeing the scene. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident but the driver remains on the loose. While enjoying time with his family, Meffen said a woman approached him concerned about a spot on his face. Meffen said he had his spot for nearly five years before getting it tested. Warriors’ salary cap cheat sheet: A look at Golden State’s financial situation heading into free agency Mike Dunleavy Jr. has his work cut out for him.The Warriors’ offseason goal is to extend their championship window by bringing in a better supporting cast to surround Stephen Curry. But due to the Warriors’ crippling financial situation and new restrictions from the latest collective-bargaining agreement, it’ll be a challenge to do just that. The Warriors are well above the second tax apron, even before potentially re-signing Draymond Green, Golden State’s top free agent target. That means they have little options to bring in outside talent. The mid-level exemption, which they used on Donte DiVincenzo last offseason, won’t be at their disposal this time around. The Warriors got two players, Brandin Podziemski (No. 19) and Trayce Jackson-Davis (No. 57), in last Thursday’s draft. Beyond that, though, Golden State’s only ways to add players are through trades or with veteran minimum signings.Dunleavy orchestrated his first big trade as the Warrio...

How to protect your dog from foxtails After a long, gloomy start to summer in Marin, the days are finally filled with glorious sunshine and mild temperatures, which for me is the best time to take my dog on long hikes. But along with all the awesome trails with beautiful views we enjoy here in Marin, I’ve also noticed a huge amount of the dreaded outdoor nemesis of dog and dog guardians: foxtails.Foxtail plants grow in fields, along the side of the road and even in your yard. The trouble starts when the foxtails dry out in spring and summer, changing from green to beige and becoming stiff and sharp. These pesky, bristly plants grow in abundance throughout California and are reported in most every state west of the Mississippi.Foxtails are named for their foxlike tails composed of many barbed awns. Once an awn penetrates the skin, it can only move forward. Dogs and cats are both susceptible to foxtails, but long-haired breeds of dogs are most commonly affected (cats’ grooming habits help to protect them). The danger of fo...
